I changed the byte from 04 to 05, saved the file, and was able to change fem4 to fem18. I opened the file with a hex editor and found exactly that. Since fem18 is 5 characters long and fem4 is 4, it was crashing. So, I realized that there was a byte somewhere that wasn't showing up in Notepad++, telling the launcher exactly how many characters to expect. player file, but I wouldn't see my player in the selector when I restarted the game. However, I wasn't finished I wanted to change my hair style from the originally (randomly generated) fem4 to my preferred fem18. These are formatted as hexidecimal color codes. Hair directives, by the way, replace colors in the original textures with specific ones. Then, switching between the layers, I used the color picker tool to find which color codes I needed to switch. I opened humanoid/human/hair/fem18.png in Photoshop, cloned the layer, and recolored it as I liked. To change the hair color, I first had to unpack the game assets so I could access the default textures. After any changes you make, you'll need to restart Starbound. If you want to do this yourself, again, make sure you have a backup. I changed the hairDirectives so I could have a custom hair color otherwise unavailable in the game. I opened one in Notepad++ to find something very messy but legible enough for me to mess with. I found the location of the player files, initially planning to use a tool to edit them. IF YOU DO THIS, MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP!! I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU SCREW UP YOUR PLAYER FILE!
